Course Description

This course introduces the physics of physiological processes (cardiovascular, muscular, neuronal and renal), physics-based therapies, and biomedical imaging. Imaging techniques and medical physics based therapies will be elucidated in the context of the physical principles that are behind them. Examples for imaging techniques which will be covered include ultrasound, X-ray imaging, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography. Radiotherapy methods will be also introduced. Part of the class will be dedicated to data acquisition and image analysis.

Experts in the field will be invited to give guest lectures, providing students with the opportunity to hear firsthand about the current applications and cutting edge development of biomedical imaging and therapy methods. Homework assignments will be geared toward exposing students to data analysis and developing projects focused on learning the recent developments in the biomedical physics.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

If you need an accommodation for a disability, please let me know at your earliest convenience. You may also need to contact the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office (734-763-3000) which typically recommends accommodations through a Verified Individualized Services and Accommodations (VISA) form. Please be aware that exams need to be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance. Any information provided by you is private and confidential and will be treated as such.

Class participation/attendance

Class participation points can be earned by asking questions and engaging in discussions during both lectures and oral presentations. In addition, during the oral presentations, students in the audience are expected to ask questions, which demonstrate that they followed and are familiar with the presented material. In the absence of volunteer questions, names of students will be randomly called.

Class attendance will be randomly taken during the guest lectures and student presentations. Each absence will result in 0.5pt deduction for a maximum of 6 pts. The attendance will be taken by sign-up sheets. We understand that emergencies happen and many students will have interviews for graduate/professional school during the semester. In such cases, please contact me in advance.

Paper presentation

For this assignment the students will have the opportunity to select, review and present a published paper. In these presentations, the students should work on building a systematic approach to discussing the paper methods, approach, and results in a clear and concise way. The length of the talks should be no longer 15-20 min followed by brief questions, comments and discussions on the topic.

Homeworks

Homework assignments will be based on the covered material during the lectures. Please refer to the syllabus for homework deadlines.

Mid-term exam

Mid-term exam will cover lectures 1-8 and 11-16. The questions will be based on the material covered during the lecture.

Final Term-Paper Project

Guidelines about the final project will be posted on the specified by the syllabus dates.
