More about linking to course content

This same basic process for inserting links to internal content (files, assignments, pages, modules, etc.) can be applied anytime you are working in the content editor.  While you can choose to simply use the Files tool as a content repository and ask your students to download content directly from there, inserting links to content in the context of an assignment, page, module or announcement can have several benefits.

  • Students may be less likely to be confused or unsure about what resources they need or where to find them.  By providing direct links to the content students need within the context of the assignment for which they need them, instructors often find that their students are much less likely to be confused about the requirements for the assignment or how to access the resources they need.
  • It can save you time in the long run.  A fairly common practice is for instructors to send regular emails to their students describing the work they will be doing that week, providing instructions for upcoming assignments, and/or providing course resources such as readings, handouts or presentation slides, etc.  It is then up to the students to locate and download the items they will need.  However, if you instead create an assignment or announcement that communicates the same information, but includes direct links to the materials students will need, this same assignment or announcement can be copied over and reused the following term.  Instructors need only to change the relevant dates, and the assignment or announcement notification will automatically be sent to students, eliminating the need for instructors to email this information each term.
