Weeding and Transfer Tape

Weeding and Transferring Your Vinyl

Remember, the vinyl cutter cuts on solid material, which means we will have to peel off everything we don't want. This is why this process is known as weeding. It's not difficult however. Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Once your cut is complete, cut out the portion of the vinyl with the cut on it. They can be difficult to see, so facing them in the light can help. Cutting a nice square or rectangle around your design with scissors will make weeding much easier.

  2. There is a box of tools specifically for weeding. The most useful one looks like a dental pick.

Using this tool, we will begin peeling away portions of the cut that we do not want. Tweezers will help in peeling, if the pick is not working.

  3. Transfer tape is a tool we use to apply the design to the surface we want. As some designs have a lot of separate parts (such as text and letters), it can be difficult to line up perfectly once we peel it off the backing paper. With transfer tape, we can lift the whole design off of the backing paper at the same time, and we don't have to align anything afterwards! Very neat!

  4. To use the transfer tape, first cut out a piece that is a bit bigger than the design made earlier.

  5. Next, peel off the backing. Then, place the transfer tape over your design.

Using the card shaped tool, smooth out any bubbles. Keep the transfer tape on your design until you are ready to apply the vinyl to its final destination

Once you are ready to apply it to whatever you want to apply it to, slowly peel the clear layer off. Your design should peel off with the clear transfer tape.

Place the vinyl wherever you wish to apply it. Smooth over any bubbles using the card shaped tool again, and slowly peel back the transfer tape to reveal your design!
