Description

Resilient Society (Earth/PitE259, 4cr, NS, BS) complements sustainability course offerings by focusing on today's impacts and challenges  of human needs (food, water, resources), of modern environmental change (drought, storms, pollution, sealevel, etc) and continuing natural events (earthquakes, landslides, floods) for an increasingly industrialized human society.  It aims to offer an applied, more immediate approach to sustainability's aspirational and longer-term thinking, toward actionable decision-making for societal well-being.
The course will focus on critical analysis of observations and data, discussion of realistic future needs, and pathways and understanding of risk, guided by the relationship:
Resilience = Prepare + Absorb + Recover + Adapt
The course targets 2nd and 3rd year students, but is open to 1st year students with an advanced interest in global change and sustainability.  In lieu of a textbook, PowerPoints are posted and supporting material will be posted on a new website:
Lectures are twice weekly and one weekly discussion session.
