Course Syllabus
- Attendance and participation: to include completion of reading before every class and participation in classroom discussion and exercises. This will count for 10% of the final grade.
- “Blogs”: these are short (250-500 words) opinion pieces on the assigned texts intended to identify questions and develop conversations around key issues. You will need to do at least one blog on each of the major texts, i.e. a minimum of 8. It might help your grade if you do more than the minimum. This will count for 20% of the final grade.
- Papers: two short papers (4-5 pages), which examine specific issues and questions relating to the major texts studied; more details to be given out early in the semester. This will count for 30% of the final grade.
PAPER ONE DUE: 7 OCTOBER PAPER TWO DUE: 11 NOVEMBER
- Research project: this requires original research using the resources of the University libraries to construct a web-history of the peoples, goods, identities, &/or attitudes that arise from and speak to empire. You will work in groups but can choose the format in which you submit your work, e.g. a long essay, an illustrated guide, a newspaper, a short story or life narrative, etc. etc. Class time will be set aside to allow you to work on this project; further details will be given out early in the semester. This will count for 40% of the final grade.
