Student access to course files

There are two basic options for sharing content stored in the Files tool with your students.

Download directly from the Files tool

Students can access and download content directly from the Files tool.  If used this way, the Files tool is essentially a content repository that is used separately from other Canvas course tools.  On the previous page, you uploaded your syllabus document to the Files tool and ensured that it is published.  Students would now be able to click on Files in the course navigation menu and download a copy of the course syllabus.

Insert links to specific files within other content

You may prefer to provide students with links to specific course files within the context of other items such as assignments, pages, modules, quizzes or announcements.  Inserting links to specific course files within the context of other course content allows you to use the Files tool in combination with other Canvas course tools.  You'll see more on how to do this in the next module on creating assignments.
