Entering student grades
Scores can be entered in the grade book in one of two ways: manually entering scores in the gradebook, or by entering grades via the SpeedGrader feature. Below, you will be shown how to enter scores manually. If you wish, you can also view additional information about using SpeedGrader.
To manually enter a score for a student, locate the desired row (student name) and the desired column (assignment). Click in the associated cell (where the row and column intersect) and enter a numerical score. You can also type EX in order to excuse the assignment for a student. Use the Enter or down-arrow key to move to the next student's row.
Muting assignments before you grade
It is ideal for instructors to grade an individual assignment for all students, then make the grades visible when they are finished grading. The way to accomplish this is by "muting" the assignment, or else a grade notification will go out to each individual student immediately upon having their score entered in the grade book.
For this reason, it is recommended that you "mute" each assignment immediately after you create it. At very least, this should be done immediately before you begin grading the assignment. When an assignment is muted, the instructor can enter scores in the gradebook and grade notifications will not be sent to any students until the instructor has "unmuted" the assignment.
To mute an assignment from the gradebook, complete the following steps.
- Hover over the heading for the assignment you wish to mute, revealing the drop-down menu link.
- Click the down-arrow to open the drop-down menu.
- Click Mute Assignment.
- After reviewing the information in the dialogue window, click Mute Assignment to confirm your choice (not shown).
- Note that a red microphone icon displays in the heading of muted assignments.
- To unmute an assignment (and release grades to all students), repeat steps 1-2 and select Unmute Assignment.
Note that assignments can also be muted and unmuted from within SpeedGrader. If you wish, learn more about muting assignments within SpeedGrader Links to an external site..
