Module 3 Overview
As mentioned in Module 2, an F-1 student must request an I-20 with OPT recommendation from the International Center (OPT I-20) to be able to participate in OPT.
Obtaining an OPT I-20 is only the first step in applying to participate in OPT; it does not mean your OPT is approved. The OPT application/I-765 still has to be sent to USCIS for adjudication. You need a copy of your OPT I-20 in addition to the other documents to be sent to USCIS as part of your complete OPT application/I-765. Applications submitted to USCIS prior to receiving an I-20 recommending OPT from the International Center will be denied by USCIS.
You can request your OPT I-20 within 1 - 2 weeks before the OPT application window to send your OPT application to USCIS begins.
