OPT Certification Course
F-1 students at the University of Michigan may be eligible to seek authorization for practical training directly related to their major field of study.
This course is designed to provide F-1 students with the key principles of Optional Practical Training (OPT).
After completing this course, students should better understand what OPT is, assess their eligibility for OPT, and know the steps and documentation needed to acquire and maintain OPT.
The course is organized in seven modules:
- Module 1: What is OPT?
- Module 2: Initial 12 Months of OPT (Pre-completion vs. Post-completion)
- Module 3: How to Request an OPT I-20
- Module 4: Filing the OPT application with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
- Module 5: What to expect while your OPT application is pending USCIS review
- Module 6: While you are On Approved OPT
- Module 7: After OPT/Transitions from OPT
Course Completion
At the end of each module, you will be required to take a quiz on the information you have learned. In order to move on to the next module, you must first answer every quiz question correctly.
You will be awarded a certificate after successfully completing this course. You will need to print this Optional Practical Training (OPT) Certificate in addition to the other required documents to request an OPT I-20.
