Module 4: Exit Interview

Preparing for an Exit Interview

Toward the end of your internship, you or your supervisor(s) may initiate a final check-in meeting or an exit interview. For interns, this meeting provides the opportunity to constructively discuss the internship experience and communicate your takeaways and desires. Below are some tips on how to prepare for this meeting in advance, so that you can maximize your time and impact.

Be reflective: Concisely tell your supervisor what knowledge or skills you gained through the internship experience.

Be grateful: Thank your supervisor for the opportunity, and highlight his/her/their contribution to your success.

  • Consider sharing 1 way that your supervisor meaningfully impacted the internship experience.

Be fair: If asked to offer constructive feedback on the internship experience, let it be actionable (something that can be practically implemented or changed).

  • Consider that you may not feel comfortable or interested in giving constructive feedback. Practice politely declining the request in advance.

Be transparent: Ask about the possibility of using examples of work performed during the internship, in a digital portfolio.

  • Consider having specific examples ready, as permission will depend on the nature of the project or task at hand.

Be forward-thinking: Ask your supervisor about serving as a reference for future job applications or other opportunities.

  • Consider following up on this request in writing to ensure you have the correct contact information.
