Module 3: Expectations 1
Setting Expectations with Your Supervisor
Meeting with your internship supervisor(s) in the first few days on the job is critical to getting started on the right foot. If your supervisor doesn’t set up a time to talk about your projects and goals early on, you should reach out to set up a meeting.
Some points to consider in your initial supervisory meeting are:
- Both your expectations and the supervisorʹs expectations regarding types of assignments you will handle
- Your work schedule and modality (i.e. in-person, remote, hybrid)
- Your check-in or supervisory meeting frequency and schedule
- Whether and how you will be trained
- Professional practices to be followed (ex: email policies, vacation requests)
- Digital tools to use (ex: for communication, logging hours, or project management)
- Opportunities for professional development (ex: attending team meetings, conducting informational interviews, supervisory opportunities)
If you are completing a Rackham Doctoral Intern Fellowship that doesn't seem to be progressing the way you had expected, or if you experience unanticipated challenges, please reach out to the Rackham internships team at rack-intern@umich.edu for guidance and support. |
