Read: Books & Collections

Explore library collections with the Collecting Areas Links to an external site. page on the U-M Library website.

Different libraries on campus have different topic areas within their book collections.

For example, the Shapiro Library Links to an external site. holds primarily introductory books for various disciplines and career resources. The Hatcher Library Links to an external site. holds in-depth research collections for the humanities and social sciences. The Art, Architecture & Engineering Library Links to an external site. holds collections for the study of art and design, engineering, architecture, and urban planning.

However, all book collections across all libraries are represented in the Library Catalog Search on the library's webpage. When you search the catalog, you are searching a database of information that holds a description of each item and its location within the various library locations.

Tip: If you’re enrolled for classes on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, or Flint campuses, you can borrow books. If you are checking out a book for the first time, bring your Mcard to the Information Service desk at one of the libraries listed above.
