3D Printing

Please Note:

Digifab will not accept any more 3D print submissions for the semester after 12pm on Thursday, April 24th.

3D Printing

Note: We cannot support production runs of items.  If you need multiple parts, please make a mold from 1 print and cast it, or send it out to a company for production.

The 3D printers aren’t reserved so much as queued. You must submit your files through this google form Links to an external site. so they can be added to the queue.  Please expect AT LEAST a 3-day turnaround before receiving your parts.  Required information includes:

  • Class it is for (include teacher and section number), or if it is a personal print.
  • Units it was created in.
  • The printer and the corresponding material you want to use are as follows (see 3D Printing Costs).
  • You want each part to be printed as a separate .stl file. If you use Rhino, select the object and "Export Selected." Make sure all parts are Boolean Unioned together and a closed solid object. Parts need to be exported in millimeters to prevent scaling errors. Watch the tutorial Links to an external site. on changing units to millimeters for export.
  • Name your file with uniquname.stl. If you have multiple files, add a number after each (uniquename1.stl, uniquename2.stl, etc).

If you have a specific orientation you'd like your parts in, you may set them up yourself in the slicing software in the Digital Fabrication Studio and submit the .form (Formlabs Prints) or .3mf.gcode files (Bambu Prints), but please include the .stl's as well.

If your print includes multiple parts, please have a separate .stl file for each part. When a printer is available, and your print is next on the list, your print will be started, and you’ll be notified when it is ready for pickup.

If there are any issues/errors in printing your file, you will be notified of how to repair them when it comes time to print. Note that errors will delay printing and are up to the sender to repair. We always recommend submitting as soon as possible to account for unforeseen issues.

3D Printing Costs

Bambu FDM Printers

PLA

  • $0.03/g: White, Grey, or Black

If you want something outside of the above option, you can also purchase your own filament for the Bambu Printers after talking to the studio coordinator to make sure it is an approved material.

Resin & SLS
The cost of resin or Nylon SLS prints must be paid before picking up your print. The cost is figured out by the mL or g based on the cost of the resin or powder chosen listed below. Consider hollowing your 3D prints Links to an external site. to reduce resin cost.

*Please be aware that some materials may be delayed. If they are not often used, they will have to be ordered before a print can begin, and shipping times can vary.

  • $0.21/mL: Clear (v4), White (v4), Grey (v4), Black (v4), Draft, Model/Model v2, Rigid 1K
  • $0.28/mL: Tough 1500, Tough 2000, Durable, Elastic 50A, Flexible 80A, Grey Pro, High Temp
  • $0.36/mL: Rigid 4k, Flame Retardant
  • $0.43/mL: Castable Wax, Rigid 10K

    -------------------

  • $0.15/g: Nylon 12 Powder for Fuse1 SLS

SLS powder prints will be printed on Fridays. We must fill the build chamber to at least 30% density with parts before we run the machine so we will not be doing it on a daily basis like the rest of the machines. Please get parts to us early so that we can reach out to other parties to try and time them so that we can fill the chamber and meet deadlines.

Materials

Before purchasing any materials to be used in DigiFab, please check with Mike or a workstudy first so that we can make sure it works for the process and function that you want it for.  Some materials may not work on our machines and some sources' materials aren't flat enough to work on our machines.  It is best to get this confirmation rather than taking a chance at wasting money and time on something that wont work.  You can also look at the DigiFab materials sources list provided here: Material Sources-Digifab.pdf Download Material Sources-Digifab.pdf
