The Metalsmithing/Jewelry Design Studio (room 1069) is available to meet various needs, including soldering, forming, casting, powder coating, and enameling. Equipment includes:

    • Acetylene Soldering Stations: soldering and annealing work.
    • Etching Station: etching designs in meta.
    • Enameling Kilns: enameling processes in metal.
    • Powder Coating Station: applying powder coats to metal.
    • Burn-Out Kiln/Casting Station: casting metal and baking on enamel and powder coating
      • Has an oxy/acetylene tank for melting metal for centrifugal casting and an electric crucible for vacuum casting.
      • Wax Injector 
    • Hydraulic Press: creating hydraulic press forms for jewelry.
    • Roll Press: rolling down or patterning non-ferrous metal.
    • Forming Station: hand forming/shaping metals.
    • Shear: cutting metal.
    • Draw Press: drawing down and shaping non-ferrous wire.
    • Flex Shafts: cleaning and drilling non-ferrous metal and shaping wax.
    • Polishers: polishing metal.
    • Sparkie II: welding pin backs and earring backs on jewelry.
    • Small Sandblaster: blasting non-ferrous metals.
    • Vulcanizer: making vulcanized rubber molds for casting.
  • Various Handtools

 

Some proficiencies are required along with the initial studio access orientation and signed form to use these tools:

    • Buffer Wheel
    • Soldering Torches

 

All faculty and staff in this area must complete the relevant EHS Training Modules Links to an external site. to work in this studio. If you’re unsure which are required, contact the studio coordinator.

Access
Before gaining access to the Metalsmithing/Jewelry Design studio, you must be in or have taken Beginning Jewelry at Stamps and go through general safety training for the space, and have completed the stamps studios general safety training. Some items in the studio require addition proficiency training.  This includes the soldering torches and the buffing machines.  You may not use these until proficiency is shown on the machines.  

If you missed a general safety training session for your class, you may reach out to the studio coordinator to get a spot in a make-up training session.  These will be held early each semester.
