Art & Architecture Shop
The Art and Architecture Shop (Rooms 1251 & 2230) is a jointly held facility, serving the Stamps School of Art & Design and TCAUP. "The Shop" is your first stop for getting your hands on traditional woodworking machinery and hand tools. It also offers equipment for metalwork, machining, and plastics–including two laser cutters. The Shop is a vital incubator space for all kinds of fabrication, from simple material preparations to sophisticated design models. Fall 2023 brings a new look to the Shop as well as new equipment and tools to learn.
The A&A Shop is proud to announce that it is joining the digital community with online resources available related to engagement with the facility. The Shop's open access hours, activities calendar, hazard communication resources, training signup, equipment and process reference material as well as other information can be found by visiting the A&A Shop Site. Beginning in Fall 2023 the Shop has new training requirements and policies. The Shop is now required to document that all users, regardless of previous qualification, have received updated safety training and demonstrated a basic level of proficiency with the use of equipment and tools before being allowed access.
If this is your first time using the A&A Shop, you must attend the in-person Orientation as well as receive Proficiency Training (PT) for each piece of equipment before use. Proficiency Training sessions may be scheduled to take place as part of your regular classwork, or you may sign up via the A&A Shop Site Links to an external site..
If you had access to the A&A Shop prior to Fall 2023, you must complete the online Orientation Refresher as well as receive Proficiency Training for each piece of equipment before use. You will have the option to have existing proficiency with any piece of equipment, tool or process documented. See details and sign up for training via the A&A Shop site Links to an external site..
Proficiency Training (PT) will be offered for groups of tools (for example, Woodworking Basics PT will include the six most commonly used machines), or by request for individual machines (for example, the metal lathe). Almost all new users should plan to attend Woodworking Basics as a starting point after the Orientation.
All Shop users are reminded that "training" in the Shop never stops. As long as anyone uses the facility, the Staff will be available for consultation, will observe and make suggestions as to the safest and most effective way to proceed.
Notes for Fall '23:
New students in both schools will be prioritized for available times to sign up for Proficiency Training as we begin the Fall '23 term. Opportunities for sign up for PT on new equipment for existing Shop users will increase as we get farther into the term.
The Shop staff will be available on a first-come first-served basis during ALL unscheduled activity times to document either training or existing proficiency on any piece of equipment or process for existing individual Shop users (or teams working together on a project) after they have completed the online Orientation Refresher. (No one with previous Shop experience will be denied access except during Orientations) Persons actively engaged with the use of the Shop facilities will receive priority of attention by the Shop Staff.
The Shop Staff have developed a documentation process that involves recording user information through the use of online forms. For any type of new training, or for verification of existing proficiency taking place in person in the Shop, make sure you have your phone with you, and be prepared to spend a minute or two filling out our forms as required.
