Definition of Plagiarism

To begin learning about academic integrity, it is important to understand plagiarism. The University of Michigan defines plagiarism as:

"taking credit for someone else's work and ideas, stealing others' results or methods, copying the writing of others without proper acknowledgment, or otherwise falsely taking credit for the work or ideas of another" (Standard Practice Guide 303.03 Links to an external site.)

LSA defines plagiarism as "representing someone else’s ideas, words, statements, or other work as one’s own without proper acknowledgement or citation" (LSA Academic Misconduct Policy Links to an external site.)

When you knowingly or unknowingly submit someone else's ideas or words as your own, you are plagiarizing.
