Discussion Section

Reading the Discussion Section

After the Abstract it is time to read the Discussion. Reading the Discussion will help you understand the main points of the article and what the authors are attempting to prove.

This section draws meaning from the Results to answer the Research Question. The Discussion places that meaning in the context of other academic work to widen the meaning to the larger research field. It ends the article by refocusing on the main point. It's okay that you haven't read the Results section yet, the main point of the article should still be clear.

Take some time and read the Discussion section. It is about 1.5 pages.

Note-Taking

As you read the Discussion, take notes on unfamiliar words, define them, and look up any acronyms you come across. Pay attention to how the authors wrap-up their research and answer their Research Question. Phrases to look for include We argue here..., Our point is... and We propose...
