The Importance of Order

Article Sections — in order

Most scholarly articles contain roughly the same sections in the same order. Depending on the subject matter, sometimes the names are slightly different (eg. "Conclusion" instead of "Discussion").

This is the typical order of sections in a scholarly article:

ORDER OF SECTIONS
    1 — Title
    2 — Abstract
    3 — Introduction
    4 — Methods
    5 — Results
    6 — Discussion and/or Conclusion
    7 — Reference List

Article Sections — try a different order

As proposed in the video from the University of Minnesota librarians, and as we will explore in this module, you may find it valuable to read the sections of an article out of order and see if you find that more efficient.

For example, try reading in this order:

ORDER TO READ
    1 — Title
    2 — Abstract
    3 — Discussion and/or Conclusion
    4 — Introduction
    5 — Results
    6 — Methods
    7 — Reference List

In this module, we will practice critically reading a computer science article on ethics in Big Data using this new order.
