Recap of BME Standards
Congratulations! You have completed the Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Standards module. You have learned how to:
- Define a standard and why standards are used.
- Locate the appropriate engineering standard using UM Library resources.
- Identify different elements of a standard, including: Scope, Referenced Documents, and Definitions.
To recap:
- A standard is a document used in the designing of products and systems. Standards improve quality, safety and interactions between different products and systems.
- You can access many engineering standards for free through the University of Michigan Library.
- All standards have common elements, such as the scope, referenced documents, and definitions which help you identify the proper standard.
If you have questions about finding standards, contact Joanna Thielen (jethiele@umich.edu), the librarian for the BME department.
If you would like to learn more about engineering standards, here are more resources:
-
- The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) created a module on how to read a standard Links to an external site..
- ANSI created an Introduction to Standards module. Links to an external site.
- The University of Minnesota Libraries created a short tutorial on engineering standards Links to an external site..
- Purdue University Libraries created a series of modules about standards Links to an external site., and an Anatomy of a Standard Guide Links to an external site. that helps clarify the purpose of each section of a standard.
This is the end of the Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Standards module.
