Why Would I Need to Find Standards?

Standards are used in industry, government, and even academia. As a student in the College of Engineering, you are expected to use standards to inform your research and design. Also, you will use standards to test your designs to see if they meet a prescribed level of performance.

You may use standards as a part of an assignment, or as a member of an engineering team. For example, you may be a member of an M-HEAL Links to an external site. team working on adding solar panels to refrigerators for vaccine storage in low-resource settings. As a part of this team, you may need to find and review standards that are relevant to the design of the solar powered appliances.

 

Designing with standards demonstrates that you are knowledgeable about best practices. Using standards can reduce time and money spent designing from scratch. It also will reduce liability.
