<Japanese Placement Exam for Spring 2024 and Beyond>
If you are intending to enroll in Japanese in the Spring, Summer or Fall semesters of 2024, please take the placement test in order to be placed into the appropriate level. No placement test will be required if you have never studied Japanese before.
*You will need to type in Japanese in the writing section. Make sure that you have Japanese keyboard ready before you start the exam.
Please read the following instructions carefully.
Exam Time: 1.5 hours

Schedule an interview

↑ We will use this online interview to assess your oral proficiency, after which we can finalize your placement. Please note that you are expected to complete steps 3 through 5 below BEFORE your interview.

Fill out the student information sheet (5 minutes)

Complete the online portion of the placement test

Writing (15 minutes) *Make sure that you have Japanese keyboard ready before you start the exam.

Grammar (40 minutes)

III. Short sentences
IV. Conversation
- Reading (30 minutes) - Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI

Notes:
- This placement exam is designed for all levels, so you may encounter questions beyond your language level. Do not make wild guesses. If you have no clue, simply move on to the next question.
- Once you click “next,” you cannot return to previous questions.
- Exam results/placement are valid for one year. You may not retake the exam before your results have expired.

It typically takes several business days for your results to become available.

You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.
