Brief Interventions (HBHE 663 Winter 2017)
Canvas Forum Contributions
Specific questions for discussion are listed in the syllabus for some of the unit sessions. Students should participate in the discussions by giving their own opinions and providing respectful, thoughtful responses to postings from others. Comments should be roughly 300-400 words. While you are expected to contribute comments for two forum questions during the term, additional comments beyond those two times are encouraged and can boost your final grade. I recommend formulating your contribution outside of the forum so that you can edit it and get it just right before posting.
Key Information:
You need to have completed your second Canvas Forum Contribution within one week of the last Forum Question listed in the syllabus (Thursday April 6). Late submissions will result in a lower grade.
Canvas forum contributions will count for 10% of your overall semester grade.
A good structure for a comment would be to:
(1) State in a general way your reaction to the question posed.
(2) Briefly give a few examples or other forms of “evidence” (loosely defined) backing up your opinion.
(3) React to one or more of the comments left by me or another student. Be respectful – state what you see as the essence of that opinion in as positive way as you can (e.g., “I can see Dr. Piette’s point that…..”). Remember that understanding and restating someone’s point doesn’t necessarily mean you agree with it.
(4) Give some additional thoughts that qualify your statement, e.g., “On the other hand….”
(5) End with a succinct restatement of your opinion.
