Course Syllabus

The APPE Health System/Hospital rotation allows student exposure to multiple areas within an institution’s pharmacy department.  Standard rotation hours vary, and are either 6:00 am - 2:30 pm or 7:00 am - 3:30 pm with an option for 11:00 am- 7:30 pm if those hours are preferred and agreed upon with the primary preceptor.  Rotation days are split into two four-hour blocks with the intent of exposing students to the complexity of a health system pharmacy.  The student experience includes one longitudinal area where the student is assigned on average four hours per day.  The remaining time will be spent in ancillary areas within the pharmacy department.

An email will be sent out to students prior to the start of the rotation to determine longitudinal area assignments.  Students are assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis to either University Hospital B2 Central Pharmacy, University Hospital operating room pharmacy satellite, the Cardiovascular Center pharmacy satellite, or the Mott OR pharmacy satellite.  Each of these sites will provide the student exposure to drug information, intravenous compounding, medication distribution, medication safety, and order verification while also providing a general understanding of pharmacy operations.

Ancillary areas include the Research Pharmacy Drug Service, Drug Information Service, Medication Compliance, Compounding Compliance, Kellogg pharmacy satellite, Children and Women’s Mott Hospital, Brighton operating room satellite, Children's emergency services pharmacy satellite, pharmacy administration, acute pain services, and operational tasks in central pharmacy.
