Before the exam starts

We will ask you to turn off and put away electronics, put away any books, notes, etc.
When we hand out the exam, do not open it or begin working on it until instructed to do so.
You may fill out the requested information on the front: initials, UMID#, section number and instructor. Your UMID# can be found on your MCard. Do not write your name or uniqname anywhere on the exam.
Pay careful attention to all announcements before the exam begins. If a correction is announced, follow the directions to make the correction before doing anything else on the exam.

During the exam

Do not separate the pages of your exam. If they do become separated, write your UMID (not name) on every page and point this out to your instructor when you hand in the exam.
The back of every page of the exam is blank, and, if needed, you may use this space for scratchwork. Clearly identify any of this work that you would like to have graded.
Read the instructions for each individual problem carefully. One of the skills being tested on this exam is your ability to interpret mathematical questions, so instructors will not answer questions about exam problems during the exam. You may ask about the meaning of English words that are unfamiliar, or ask if you think there is an error on the exam. Most questions will be answered with, "Do your best." Frequently the answers to questions students have can be found in the directions of the problem, so read them carefully.
Show an appropriate amount of work for each problem, so that graders can see not only your answer but how you obtained it.
You must use the methods learned in this course to solve all problems.
Include units in your answer where that is appropriate.
Problems may ask for answers in exact form. Recall that $LaTeX: x=\sqrt{2}$ is a solution in exact form to the equation but $LaTeX: \text{x = 1.41421356237}$ is not.
Time remaining will be written on the board to help you keep track.
Problems are not of equal difficulty. If you find yourself stuck on one problem, move on and come back to it, so that you're able to show us what you know on the other problems.
Remember that these problems are intended to be challenging, and it's okay to not be able to get every part of every problem! We give partial credit for correct work and reasoning on these exams.

At the end of the exam

You should have time to work on all problems of the exam, and are encouraged to look carefully over your answers before turning your exam in. Do your answers make sense? Is there some way you can double-check them?
If you decide to leave early, you may do so up until 10 minutes before the end of the exam. At that time, we will ask all students to remain in their seats until we release you.
When time is called, remain in your seat and quiet until we release you. This is very important: we need to make sure that we are able to collect all exams, which becomes difficult when students are talking and moving around. When we have confirmed that we have all exams, we will let you go.
Remember not to panic too much if the exam didn't go as well as you'd like. The exam will be graded out of 60 points, but will only contribute 15 "total points" to your grade; this will be calculated by taking
((your score (out of 60) / 60) * 15.
Look again at the Student Guide to see how this contributes to your final course grade. In particular, note that the total point cutoffs for letter grades are designed to be fairly generous, so that there is room to make some mistakes and still do well in the course, as long as you are staying on top of your other work for the course.
