Reflection 4
Have you discussed your internship plans with your academic advisor?
Some advisors will support an internship proposal, and others might need more convincing. Whatever the circumstance, here are some key points you will want to consider:
- Be prepared to answer questions and listen to your advisor's thoughts
- Share your mutual interest in making degree progress and continuing your research
- Share your career goals to make the case for an internship's value and professional advantages
- Connect the benefits of internship work to your research, scholarship, or teaching
- Record the results and expectations of your conversation so that you have a document to point back to if any concerns arise during an internship experience
Reflection: What do you anticipate your advisor's main question will be about you completing a doctoral internship? How will you preemptively address that question in your proposal? |
