Popular vs. Peer-Reviewed
- Due No Due Date
- Points 10
- Submitting a text entry box or a file upload
In the first assignment you were asked to find a full-text research article on a topic of your choosing; for this assignment you will be using this article, so keep this article nearby so you can access it quickly. In addition to this article, you will also locate an article on the same topic in a popular source. Locating an popular magazine article in the research databases is preferred, but make certain the article is full-text and on the same topic you used for the first assignment. You will be comparing the information amongst these two articles, so it is very important they be on the same topic and fully accessible.
Provide complete sentences and answers to each of the following questions:
- In this section, we talked about how research language is used in our everyday world ("9 out of 10 doctors approve of this product"). What would be the motivation behind using this type of language in products and advertising?
- Describe three differences between scholarly articles/journals and popular articles/magazines?
- Explain (in detail) the process you would use to find a scholarly article. Why do you prefer this process? What are some other strategies you might use?
- Using the popular article you have already located, use the How to Evaluate Journal Articles rubric Download How to Evaluate Journal Articles rubric in the previous section and provide responses to the following areas: (a) Purpose of the Article, (b) Type of Journal, (c) Organization and Content, (d) Bias, (e) Date of Article, (f) Bibliography, (g) Usefulness, (h) Authority, (i) Scope/Coverage, (j) Audience, and (k) Illustrations. This will be a very different use of this rubric, but should get you thinking about how the popular magazine differs from the research article you found in the first assignment.
- With regards to your chosen topic, what are three primary differences you see in how your topic is covered in the popular magazine article versus the scholarly journal article? Why would your instructor want to see a scholarly article used instead of a popular magazine article? This question is intended for you to reflect on how the content is presented and why it is important in research. Your answers should be directed toward your topic and how it is covered differently between the two different articles.
Note: It is strongly suggested you draft your response in a Word document or other safe place so you do not lose your work. Once you are done copy and paste it here or upload it as a file to complete the assignment.
