Folders

You can organize your library with folders.

Step 1: Create a folder

To create a new folder, click the yellow icon in the top left hand corner of your Zotero program. If you hover over this icon, it reads 'New Collection,' which is what Zotero calls folders.

Click on this icon. You'll be prompted to name this folder. Choose a name and click 'OK.'  Your new (and empty) folder will now appear in the left-hand menu.

Navigate back to the articles you've already saved by clicking 'My Library' in the left-hand menu.

Step 2: Move items into the folder

Select any articles you want to move by clicking on them in the center pane.

(You can select all articles by clicking the first one, holding down the shift key, and then clicking the last. You can select several, non-consecutive articles by clicking the first, holding down the control key on Windows or command key on Mac, then clicking another.)

Drag the select articles toward the folder in the left-hand menu, and drop them when the folder appears highlighted.

If you prefer not to drag and drop, you can also right-click or control-click over the selected articles in the center pane. Choose 'Add to Collection,' from the drop-down menu, then click on the name of your folder.

When you click on your folder name in the left-hand menu, you will find the articles you moved there.

Note that those articles will not disappear from your 'My Library' folder. The 'My Library' folder is a master folder that contains all articles, regardless of whether they're contained in a folder or not.

If you want to see which articles do not exist in a folder, check your 'Unfiled Items' folder, which is an automatically generated folder listed on the left-hand pane of your Zotero program.
