Why Zotero?
Here's why I recommend Zotero (pronounced zoh-TAIR-oh).
Zotero is:
- Free to use.
- There is a limit to how many PDFs you can store in the cloud with a free account; you can decide if it's worthwhile for you to upgrade your account for a fee Links to an external site..
- Easy to learn.
- Excellent for collaboration.
- Very good at identifying/citing non-traditional sources (such as newspaper articles, websites, government reports, YouTube videos, etc.).
- An open-source product run by a non-profit organization.
- Zotero and your data privacy Links to an external site.!
Here's why you might NOT be interested in Zotero.
You might:
- Not care about saving, organizing and sharing your sources. If you're only looking for help with citing, try ZoteroBib Links to an external site., a free web tool that doesn't require a software download or registration.
- Only have access to a Google Chromebook rather than a typical laptop/desktop. (While installing and using Zotero is possible on some Chromebooks Links to an external site., it requires some tech savvy, which can deter some users.)
- Be working with advisor(s)/team(s) who use a different citation management product.
- Prefer a different program. That's fine - choose whatever works for you!
