Accessible Google Docs

In a previous module, you learned how to make Microsoft word documents accessible for folks with disabilities. In this video, we will be demonstrating some of the same concepts in Google Docs.

What you will Learn

  • Headings are a way to provide hierarchy to your users and will be especially helpful to folks with assistive technologies when navigating through your document.
    • You are not limited to the default style of any type of heading. You can update the style to match one heading that you manually apply formatting to, so that all other headings have those attributes.
  • Tables are very helpful when representing tabular data in your document, and when used correctly can be very accessible. We strongly recommend avoiding nested tables when you only want to apply visual formatting, as tables generally only work well for users when used for actual tabular data.
  • Color alone should be avoided when providing data in a document. Providing a text alternative makes your conent accessible to the widest audience.
  • When you use headings correctly, you have the benefit of being able to insert a nicely formatted table of contents that will be generated baded on your heading hierarchy.
