A patriarchal society consists of a male-dominated power structure throughout organized society and in individual relationships. Power is related to privilege. In a system in which men have more power than women, men have some level of privilege to which women are not entitled. Feminist theorists have expanded the definition of patriarchal society to describe a systemic bias against women. As second-wave feminists examined society during the 1960s, they did observe households headed by women and female leaders. They were, of course, concerned with whether this was uncommon. More significant, however, was the way society perceived women in power as an exception to a collectively held view of women's "role" in society. Rather than saying that individual men oppressed women, most feminists saw that oppression of women came from the underlying bias of a patriarchal society. (Napikoski, 2020)

What is Intersectional literacy or intelligence? Well it is really the creative ability to look at something from two more perspectives, and is a requirement of any form of competency. That is: we are ALWAYS (as is everyone and every writing, expression or value) the result of multiple "intersecting" histories, and race, gender, ethnic identities.

What happens when we look at RACE and GENDER, or GENDER and ABILITY, or RELIGION and GENDER -- etc. The answer: we get a completely different perspective and vision of both history, historical narratives, current events, our identities, beliefs, values and of course, what we must do, learn or act-on to advance our competency.

Gender and DEJI: Begins with an understanding of history, and specifically, the history of patriarchy. For this week: we ask that you read and consider, and extract key points from the following:

Having read/viewed the above, and EXTRACTED Key points, quotes and ideas to your EXTRACTION Journal/Bib. Now:

Describe (with support) your understanding of Patriarchy, its evolution and impact on humanity;
Factor in the insights and perspectives of the core articles or media, and the author's perspectives to Gender roles/inequity and patriarchy,
Now reflect and connect your own personal history: parents, religious beliefs, up-bringing, experiences with teachers/elders, school/work, as relates both to patriarchy and gender roles, problems, current events, and your own life.
Finally, based on your personal experiences with gender roles and inequity, or with the abusive drain of patriarchy on women, or on forcing men to exert effort to see, recognize, embrace, and then work to counter it... what specific actions will be required by you, to both be free of antiquated non DEJI competency as concerns gender, and work to assist this process in your career/ life? ESSAY: This should be a min. 4 paragraph essay, with liberal use of support. It requires you to move from the voice of the objective reporter, summarizing core concepts and definitions of the articles/videos, to a reflective first person writer: willing to objectively deal with whatever vision, actions, or beliefs you've come to engender as a result of your personal past... plus project a course of action wherein justice and equity, how much more inclusivity of women and men (and all non-binary identities), may become increasingly developed over your life.
