The Stamps School recognizes that real-world learning experiences are essential to the success of our students as emerging professionals. We are striving for 100% participation in learning beyond the classroom and strongly encourage all of our students to engage in an internship during their time at Stamps. In addition, the Stamps School supports the NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) guidelines for what defines an internship.

Please note: Internship credits NEVER count toward studio credit. Stamps does not grant retroactive credit for internships so please submit the proposal BEFORE the internship.

Steps to Complete an Internship for Credit

Download and complete the Internship Proposal form outlining the type of internship, the tasks, and the length of the internship, etc. Remember, you can have a maximum of 3 credits of internship toward your graduation requirements. If an employer insists you receive credit after you have earned the max of 3, please contact the Career Development Coordinator (CDC) at stamps-careerdev@umich.edu.
Secure Internship Proposal form signatures from your supervisor and the CDC. You need to do this BEFORE undertaking an internship: the signatures indicate a contractual agreement. Again, you must complete the proposal before you undertake the internship to get credit.
Register for the internship (ARTDES 351) after receiving the override from the CDC. During the internship, the CDC will check in with the student to see how things are going.
After the internship or Curricular Practical Training is complete, you must submit a summary ( Internship Summary Form ) and schedule a time to meet with the Career Development Coordinator (by emailing stamps-careerdev@umich.edu) to discuss your experience, how you plan to list it on your resume, talk about it interviews, etc. Your Internship Supervisor must also submit the supervisor’s evaluation ( Internship Evaluation Form ) to the CDC. Credit will be posted to your transcript on completion of this final evaluation.
