MT 533, is an introduction to analytical approaches to music of the 20th century. The course is based on a foundation of observational and interpretive skills developed in relation to tonal music. In addition, since significant changes in aesthetic outlook developed over the late 19th, and early 20th century, the attributes of musical works changed, and theoretical practices have developed to address these changes. The course will introduce these ideas as they are needed to understand the music.
