Principles of UDL

CAST's UDL guidelines emphasize three principles in order to help instructors align their teaching with the three brain networks identified as critical for learning within UDL research. The three principles are:

  1. Provide multiple means of student engagement that tap into learners’ interests, challenge them appropriately and motivate them to learn.
  2. Provide multiple means of representation that give learners a variety of ways to acquire information and build knowledge.
  3. Provide multiple means of student action and expression that provides learners with alternatives for demonstrating what they have learned.
