ARCH 316 001 FA 2015

This course introduces beginning architecture students to fundamental design concepts, and considers how the representation and experience of space shapes views of the world. Divided into 5 groups: Ways of Seeing, Representation, Tectonics, Formalisms and Politics, weekly lectures of conceptual premises are paired with relevant case studies and techniques, and discussions shift continuously between the reflective and productive aspects of architectural design. Through lectures, readings and seminar discussions, students are familiarized with a selection of foundational ideas, pertinent both within and beyond the discipline, and are encouraged to use architecture as a critical lens to examine and reimagine the world they inhabit.
